According to the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), as many as 148 athletes across all the sports who have booked their Tokyo tickets have been vaccinated by at least the first dose.
Bifurcating these 148 athletes, 131 athletes have received the first dose while 17 athletes have been fully vaccinated. The news was officially declared by IOA president Narinder Batra.
These 148 athletes include the officially qualified athletes as well as few potential athletes who are expected to make a cut.
Along with these, 15 Paralympic bound athletes also received their first jab of the vaccine. The Paralympics is scheduled to open on 24th August.
So as of 20th May, a total of 163 athletes including Para athletes have already been vaccinated with at least one dose. Along with the athletes, it is reported that around 87 officials who are expected to travel to Tokyo have also been vaccinated. It is important for the Indian government to give ‘vaccination status to all Tokyo bound athletes and officials.’
As of today, more than 90 athletes have officially qualified for the Tokyo Olympics scheduled to open on 23rd July. More are expected to join them to make a healthy-looking Indian contingent at the Tokyo Olympics.
Indian Athletes Shifted To Other Countries for Training Camp
The Indian shooters are currently training in Croatia and will directly travel to Japan from Croatia. They have been vaccinated with the first dose before leaving for Croatia. All the shooters will receive their second jab in Croatia. This report was officially declared by NRAI.
Few Indian athletes who have been training in other countries will receive their vaccination in there itself. Weightlifter Mirabai Chanu is expected to get her vaccination shots in the United States.
While Indian qualified fencer Bhavani Devi for her first jab of vaccination in Italy, where she has been training.
