There’s news for Kim Clijsters fans, as the former world no.1 champion on 26th December, Thursday revealed that she will need a wildcard to participate in Olympics 2020 event.
After seven years of break, the 36-year-old tennis star is willing to make a comeback to the tennis court. A mother of three children, Kim initially planned to join tennis in January, but a severe knee injury sustained during her training and thereby she would have to delay her comeback and skip the Australian circuit.
According to the Olympic games rules, an athlete must have played 2 federal cup ties in the past four years to qualify for the Olympic games. Kim has to play for Belgium in the Federal Cup Tie against Kazakhstan, scheduled to begin in February. Even though Kim participate in the Fed Cup tie, she would still not be eligible of playing the 2 fed cup ties in 4 years according to the Olympic official terms. However, as per the International Federation criteria, she can make an official entry only through the wild card entry or exemptions.
Clijsters has so far clinched the World no.1 Singles and Doubles title simultaneously in the year 2003. Also, she has won six Grand Slam Titles, which include four singles and two doubles. Looking at her record she could be the strong candidate for the wild card entry if she determines to apply for the same. Also if she maintains her ranking in the top 300 of the world ranking in both singles and doubles by the time the cut off date of the qualification appears.
Also, Qualification rules state that “ 32 teams are scheduled to compete in the men’s and women’s doubles competition. Maximum 10 places are reserved for the top 10 players in the doubles ranking, who could select any player from their NOC ranked in the top 300 either from doubles or singles.
Clijsters on her social media account posted an update stating “ The last few weeks my knee was doing well, but it has not recovered fully yet. I am increasing the intensity of training. And I like it very much. I am looking forward to my first tennis tournament”.
She also said she has to be patient and in a few months, it will be there. But chances of Kim playing the Monterrey WTA event is confirmed scheduled to begin from 2nd to 8th March. Also, she is likely to attend the Indian Wells Premier as well as the Charleston Tournament.
Clijsters could also play a tournament in February if her training goes well. But that will be confirmed later. Her three Grand Slam Single Titles came after the birth of her first child, with a comeback in the year 2009.
Clijsters has so far never won a medal in the Olympic games and has participated in only the 2012 Olympic games in London, where she had to face a defeat from World champion Maria Sharapova in the quarterfinal match.
