Pranati Nayak will travel to Tokyo Olympics 2021 after qualifying through continental quota. Pranati Nayak had won the bronze medal at the Asian Artistic Gymnastics Championship in 2019.
The 26-year-old Pranati from West Bengal was the second reserve behind the Sri Lankan Elpitiya Badalge Dona Milka Geh for the Asian quota. But Pranati’s spot got finalized after the 9th Senior Asian Championships scheduled to be held in China got cancelled due to the pandemic situation.
“I was very disappointed when I couldn’t achieve the qualifying score during the 2019 World Championship and with the pandemic cancelling all events, I never imagined that I will be able to realize this dream of going to the Olympics. I am now waiting for the official communication from the Asian or world body regarding the same”
Pranati Nayak’s long-time coach Minara Begum is extremely pleased to see Pranati qualify. Minara Begum retired from the Sports Authority of India (SAI) in 2019.
While commenting on her qualification, Minara Begum said
“She retained her ranking points that she had achieved after competing at the Asian event in Mongolia and the world championship in Germany and got the Asian quota after the China event was cancelled. I’m extremely delighted for her”.
Praniti Excited to Put a Good Performance at Tokyo Olympics
Pranati was part of the Target Olympics Scheme (TOPS) for a year and a half till the 2018 Asian Games. But since she has qualified for the Olympics, it’s expected that Pranati will be back into TOPS.
Pranati expected to put up a strong performance at the 2019 World Championships, but her poor score in beam affected the overall score. It was tough for many athletes to stay fit during pandemic situations. Similar was the case with Pranati. But Pranati feels that she kept herself fit and trained well even if no events were scheduled for a complete year. Pranati hopes that she can train hard in the next few months and put a good performance at the Tokyo Olympics.
Pranati Nayak is the only Indian Gymnast at the Tokyo Olympics.
